31km. Or 20 miles, if you prefer. My feet are sore, but I've arrived and checked in, and George isn't far behind. The beer in front of me is very necessary!
It's really strange how you think people have gone ahead, or you've left them behind - with some regret, but knowing that's the way the Camino works - and then there they are again. Mary and Bernadette, who are on one of the planned itineraries where hotels are booked and luggage transferred for you, went ahead a few days ago, and I didn't think I'd see them again. But yesterday night, after Mass, George and I stopped where we planned to eat - and there was Mary... We're likely to meet for food in León.
The walk today was still 'meseta', but a little more varied - and with mountains increasingly visible ahead. The constant wheat is now interspersed with maize and vegetable crops. Much of it was by the road, but not a busy road. I spent some time walking and talking with Kirsten, from Virginia - who has parents in law from Birmingham. And more time just alone.
Tomorrow is the city of León, now just 24km away. It seems pretty amazing that just three weeks ago I'd just arrived in St-Jean-Pied-de-Port!
